Hardly any other coffee grinder has made such waves in recent years as the Baratze Sette 270: With its futuristic design and new grinding technology, the Sette 270 sets completely new standards for coffee and espresso grinders for home use. It is clear that we too have taken a closer look at the mill and tested it. We share our experience with the grinder with you in this comprehensive Baratza Sette 270 review. What awaits you here:
What is special about the Baratza Sette 270?
The Baratza Sette 270 has two special features: It is the only grinder with a conical grinder in which the outer part of the grinder rotates while the inner grinding cone is fixed – in conventional mills with conical grinders it is exactly the other way around.
This new grinding technology and the horizontally built-in motor ensure that the Baratza Sette 270 grinds incredibly quickly. We made the comparison with other mills with a 40mm conical grinder. The result: With the Baratze Sette 270, the coffee is ground almost twice as fast as with conventionally designed grinders.
Depending on the degree of grinding, the Baratza Sette achieves an incredible grinding speed of up to 5.5 g per second. Wow!
In conventional mills, the motor is located below the grinder. Due to the design, the ground coffee must therefore be passed through the grinder through a kind of chamber at an angle until it is ejected. So there is always some ground coffee left in the grinder – in the so-called dead space – which is only ejected during the next grinding process.
The Baratza Sette 270 solves the dead space problem with its innovative design. The Sette is shaped like the number 7 (sette (Italian) = seven). And not without reason: the motor is located behind the grinder. The grist falls directly out of the mill without having to take detours through the dead space.
The advantages: There is no ground coffee left in the coffee grinder. And the adjustment of the grinding degree also has a direct effect and not a portion later.
Who is the Baratza Sette 270 suitable for?
The Baratza Sette 270 is suitable for everyone who is looking for a modern coffee grinder that grinds coffee beans quickly, precisely, and homogeneously for the preparation of espresso and filter coffee with a degree of grinding up to Chemex. Espresso lovers, in particular, will be delighted with the stepless micro-settings. The fine-tuning for the perfect espresso shot works perfectly.
The Baratza Sette is rather unsuitable for preparing coffee with the French press and the Bayreuth jug. In our experience, the grist is not coarse enough – the coffee is over-extracted.
If you are not a fan of French press and Bayreuth jugs anyway, then the Baratza Sette is the perfect all-rounder for semi-professional use at home.
The Sette is not a gastronomic mill. It is designed for household use only. According to the manufacturer, the mill was designed for a maximum of 1 kg per day with an operating time of 10%. Specifically: the grinder is only designed for a short period. You should therefore grind a maximum of 100 g of coffee beans in one piece because otherwise, the grinder will simply get too hot. If you should grind larger amounts in a row, it is essential to plan a 60-second break between the grinding processes.

The grinder of the Baratza Sette 270
The 40 mm conical grinder of the mill is made of high-quality stainless steel. What is unique about this grinder is that the inner part is fixed while the outer part rotates. This new construction increases the grinding speed. The Baratza Sette is certainly one of the fastest grinders with a 40 mm conical grinder for domestic use.
The grinder has a total of 270 different grinding degree settings: 30 macro setting steps that can be set in fixed steps (in numbers 1 – 31) and a stepless micro setting with nine indicators (letters A – I). You can use the macro setting to make rough settings for the grind, and the micro setting is used for fine-tuning. We advise you to always make adjustments to the grinding degree while the engine is running.
The inner cone of the grinder can be easily installed and removed. This makes the subsequent cleaning with a brush and toothpick easier.
Which grind for which preparation method?
You can use the settings for the individual preparation methods listed below as rough guidelines. Please keep the following in mind: The actual particle size for a specific setting depends on various factors such as the degree of roast (light or dark), oil content, freshness, moisture, and type of coffee beans.
|Brewing method||Grind recommendation|
|espresso||3 – 9|
|Chemex||25 – 31|
Change grinder for coarser filter coffee grinds
We bought the Baratza Sette 270 to primarily grind coffee beans for filter coffee of all kinds – use for espresso like the Quamar M80E espresso grinder. However, we found that the grind was still too fine for the preparation of a large amount of coffee with the Chemex (1 l), even in the coarsest grind setting.
That’s why we replaced the inner grinding cone with the Baratza Sette BG Cone Burr Holder for just under 50 $. This cone is designed for better performance and uniformity when grinding the medium to coarse range. Changing the grinder was easy and didn’t take more than two minutes.
Setting of the Baratza Sette 270
The set is very easy to use. The control panel has a total of seven buttons: The start/pause button and the stop button are provided for manual grinding. The grinding time can be programmed in steps of 0.01 seconds using the grinding time setting buttons. Three grinding times can be individually saved and easily accessed using the three memory buttons marked 1,2,3.
We have programmed the first two memory buttons: The first button for preparing 300 ml of filter coffee (approx. 18 g of ground coffee in 5.87 seconds) and the second button for preparing 500 ml of filter coffee (approx. 32 g of ground coffee in 10, 45 sec). This procedure assumes that the grinding time is initially stopped before the buttons are programmed. When that’s done and you’re using the same coffee beans over and over, the Baratza Sette produces very consistent results. During our tests, we could only determine deviations of 0.1 g – 0.3 g, which is completely OK.
The design of the Sette 270
The Baratza Sette 270 looks just beautiful in our opinion. The design is modern, almost futuristic. As the Italian name “sette” already suggests, the mill is shaped like a 7. We have seldom seen such a stylish coffee grinder. The mill is a real eye-catcher and is one of our most attractive kitchen appliances.
Points are deducted for the housing, which is made of plastic. The mill still looks very high quality, is cleanly processed, and is stable.
Adjustable holder system
The Baratza Sette 270 convinced us with its adjustable holder system. You can put the portafilter as well as the collecting container or various coffee filters such as the Hario V60 or the Kalita Wave Dripper in the charging forks. You can easily change the position by pushing the forks. Ingenious construction!
The charging forks fit most portafilter sizes and contain an integrated hook that ensures the stability of the attached portafilter. The collecting container included in the scope of delivery was made of antistatic plastic – advantageous because it reduces the scattering of the ground material into the collecting container during the grinding process.
