What is an espresso macchiato?

Prepare espresso macchiato

With an espresso macchiato, the espresso is refined with a touch of milk foam. With a spoon, a dollop of milk foam is placed in the middle of the espresso. This will make the espresso look stained. And this is exactly where the name of the drink comes from: The word macchiato means “tainted”. Instead of a dollop of milk foam, the espresso can also be completely covered with a small milk foam cap. About two to three teaspoons of milk foam are used for this. That looks especially nice for guests.

Latte Art & Espresso Macchiato

There are also ways of preparing espresso macchiatos in which a little warm milk is added to the espresso in addition to the foam. It looks especially nice when the espresso macchiato is decorated with latte art. Check out the video below.

There is no recipe for the right mixture between espresso and milk. The main thing is that the proportion of espresso is greater than the proportion of milk and the drink is served in an espresso cup or a small espresso glass. It is estimated that 25 ml of espresso are refined with around 10 – 15 ml of milk foam. The milk refines the espresso and emphasizes the different aromas in the espresso through the fat content in the milk.
